Hypertrophy Training Principles: Volume, Intensity & Frequency
Determining Optimal Training Volume
Training volume, measured in hard sets taken within 0โ3 Reps in Reserve (RIR), is directly correlated with muscle growth up to an individual's Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV). Beginners thrive on 8โ12 sets per week, while advanced bodybuilders require 15โ20+ targeted sets.
Managing Intensity and Reps in Reserve (RIR)
To trigger myofibrillar hypertrophy, sets must reach a high level of effort. Training to an RIR of 1โ2 on compound movements (squats, bench press, deadlifts) and 0โ1 RIR on isolated machine exercises maximizes motor unit recruitment without causing excessive central nervous system (CNS) fatigue.
